A Good Belt Can
Be Spoiled in the Yard.
Rubber conveyor belts are often bought ahead of a shutdown and kept as spares for months. A belt stored badly can take a permanent set, crack on the surface or pick up moisture in the fabric – and the damage only shows up after it is fitted. These are the simple rules we follow in our own godowns at Betul, Amritsar and Bhiwandi.
Where to Store

How to Place the Roll
- Best: hang the roll on a steel pipe or shaft through the core, supported on stands, so the belt does not rest on its own weight.
- Acceptable: roll resting on its curved face on a pallet or cradle, chocked so it cannot roll – and never stack rolls on top of each other.
- Avoid: standing the roll on its flat side for long periods. The belt edges get crushed and can take in moisture.
- A roll resting on its curved face slowly flattens at the bottom – turn it a quarter turn every month or so.
- Keep the end of the belt tied down so the outer wraps do not loosen.
Lifting and Moving
- Lift the roll with a spreader bar and a shaft through the core, or with wide slings around the roll.
- Never lift with a chain or wire rope passed directly around the belt – it cuts the edges.
- Never lift a roll by pushing forklift tines into the side of the roll. Use the core or a cradle.
- Do not drop the roll off a truck onto the ground. Even a short drop can crush the edges and damage the fabric.
- When rolling a roll a short distance by hand, roll it in the direction that tightens the wrap, never the one that loosens it.
Belt Taken Off a Conveyor
Used belts that will be refitted should be cleaned of material, dried, and rolled with the top cover inside on a core. Mark the direction of travel and which side is the top cover with paint – it saves confusion later.
Before You Fit a Stored Belt
- Unroll a few metres and look for surface cracks, sticky patches or a hard, shiny surface.
- Check the ends of the roll for moisture in the fabric.
- If a roll has a flat spot or crushed edges from bad storage, let the unrolled belt lie flat for some time before joining, and trim damaged edges.
